Shane Daly on cinematography and HBO's 'The Defiant Ones'

August 13, 2017

Keith Nelson Jr. of Digital Trends recently spoke to cinematographer Sean Daly about the meaning of cinematography, working with David Lynch, shooting HBO's Dr. Dre/Jimmy Iovine documentary The Defiant Ones, and more.

In the interview, Daly gives a nice explanation what it is that a cinematographer actually does:

"Effectively, what we do is take it from the page to the screen. So, we have our feet in the technical world and the artistic world. From pre-production through to post-production, we work with the director, the other heads of departments, the product designer, [and] the costume designers. We interpret the script and the visual aspect of the story, understand technically how we can deliver that interpretation, and then enable it. We find the best way to tell the story."
